Improve your reading skill and you will realize that you may be able to retain a greater deal of knowledge. The quicker you can improve them, the better it is for you to gain more knowledge that you need to succeed, especially in today’s world that thrives on information. However, reading is not easy skill. To become a good reader you should follow these following suggestions.

1. Selective Reading:

Choose topics that help you find out more about what you already know. This way, you will only need to refer to the dictionary for the meaning of words rather than translating them first to your native language. When you are able to understand the meaning of the word without translation, your will to read is empowered.

2. Read as much as possible

Okay, that’s not a secret. Practice makes perfect. Read as much as you can. It can be everything: a book, newspaper, comic, magazine, instruction, blogs, websites, message boards and so on.

If you don’t understand something, then use a dictionary. However, first try to guess what a given sentence or word can mean. There will always be a word whose meaning you won’t be sure of unless it’s a really easy text.

If your English reading skills are low, start with easy stories like fairy tales or books for kids. If your English skills are better, try with something more difficult. Constantly try to enrich your reading experience by reading various things.

3. Pick the right book

Read only books which you can more or less understand. If you need to look up a word in every sentence, it’s not a book for you. Find something easier. You can start with fairy tales which are usually written in easier language. Generally speaking, books for kids are way easier. Don’t be embarrassed to read them – you are learning!

4. Practice regularly

Set aside at least 15-30 minutes a day to read. Eventually, it will become your habit. Making reading a habit is one of the best habits you can adopt! The more you’ll read, the better reader you’ll become.

A lot of people say that a habit develops after 21 days, so make up your mind that you will read at least 15 minutes a day for 21 days. After this time it should become your second nature. And your reading skills should be way better than now.

According to statistics, about 1,500,000,000 people in the world speak English and another 1,000,000,000 are learning it. Learning the English vocabulary can be difficult because there are always exceptions to the rules and the language is punctuated with many abbreviations and colloquialisms. However, if you do choose to study English, then there are simple exercises that you can follow to make learning easier. In this article, we will teach you a few simple strategies to help you master the English language.

Learners of the English language are taught to put words into the proper context as much as possible. You can learn to do this by reading frequently. The more words you are exposed to the better your vocabulary will be. While you read, pay close attention to words you do not know and underline or highlight them with a marker.

First, try to figure out their meanings from the supporting context. Then look the words up. Read and listen to challenging material like the English language news so that you will be exposed to many new words. Once you have learned the new word, practice using it. Using new words frequently will help you to learn to speak English fluently. Research shows that it takes from 10 to 20 repetitions to really make a word part of your repertoire.

Write words down as a regular part of your English lessons. It helps to write both the definition and a sentence using the word on an index card that can later be reviewed. Studies have shown that it is easier to learn when you can both see and hear the word. You should say the word aloud to activate your auditory memory and relate the word to words you already know. For example, the word “gargantuan,” which means very large, has a similar meaning to the words gigantic, huge and large.

Playing word games are a simple and fun way to practice and improve your English vocabulary. Play games like Scrabble, Boggle, and do crossword puzzles. These and other word games are available for the computer, so you do not need to be dependent on a partner to play. Also, try out the Franklin Electronic Dictionary that features built-in word games. There are also a number of free games available online, so make game playing a part of your English lessons.

Even if English is not your native tongue, learning the language will allow you access to a new world of information. Whether you are a student, a business person or a social services worker, English is the most commonly used language in the world. Most pages on the internet are in that language, which incorporates over a billion pages of information!

It is the language of technology, especially high technology like computer sciences, genetics and medicine. If you are going to read about technology, then you will probably have to do it in this language. There are countless resources available to help you learn and master the English vocabulary, so embrace the language and open up a whole new world to yourself.

This type of course will help you learn and practice conversational English enabling you to carry on a conversation if you decide to move to an English-speaking country of if you want to do business with a company in such a country.

Speaking English is not just about using the proper pronunciation of the words. It is possible for a person to know what how to pronounce words and to read sentences], but if you do not know the rules of grammar and be able to understand what you read, you cannot really call yourself a fluent English speaker.

There are many free online courses you can take to help you learn to speak English or become better at speaking the language. While some people just want to learn English for the sake of knowing another language, there are those that want to attend college to gain a specialized diploma or degree that is only offered in an English-speaking country and others want to learn to speak English to advance their careers. Also, there are those who feel that only a course that charges tuition is of any value to them but this is not so. There are very comprehensive online courses in English that are completely free.

Your reasons for taking the course will dictate the commitment you make to the learning process. You should set a schedule for yourself so that you will have a certain time that you dedicate to your studying online. You should also vary the activities you do so that you don’t get overwhelmed when you keep doing the same task all the time. This includes doing some of the listening activities, repeating the sentences, doing the activities and playing some of the games.

If you did enroll in classes, the instructor will use various techniques to help you learn and perfect your speaking skills. The same is true of an online course. You can take an audio course in which you listen to conversations and passages on a wide variety of topics. Since the script of the passages is available on the screen, you can read along with the speaker and then record yourself reading the same passages. This activity will help you learn the correct nuances of pronunciation of the English language.

An online course also includes lessons on the rules of grammar that start right at the beginning with how to introduce yourself to someone else. This takes the form of short dialogues that you can read on the screen and listen to. Then you can go to the instruction on how to use the various structures and then to different kinds of practice exercises to make sure that you have learned the concept. The practice exercises for the audio lessons take the form of comprehension questions to make sure you understand what you hear and read.

Notthing can be learned from the classroom. A little extra help can go a long way.

Here are some ways on how to develop good English writing skills.

1) Read Books.

If you’re an avid reader, then this should not be a problem for you. Reading books helps you get a better grasp of the English language. You’re able to see how people use certain words or construct sentences apart from the examples on your language handout or references. Plus, you’ll also gain more confidence in your own writing style.

If you’re not a fan of books, you can always read short stories or feature articles online. Even some magazines will help you develop good writing skills in English.

2) Start Writing.

If you want to develop good writing skills in English, you’re going to have to write something at some point. A lot of people who keep journals are able to practice their English very well.

If you prefer typing to actual writing, that’s not a problem either. Your writing skills will not be impeded by whatever method you choose to use. Writing in a notebook will not necessarily make you a better writer than typing on your computer. However, stick to the one you’re more comfortable with.

3) Put Your Work Out There.

Part of the ways on how to develop good writing skills in English is feedback. How else would you know how good or bad your work is unless you show it to others? A lot of people fear this stage because they don’t really want to hear others criticize their work.

However, that is part and parcel of the whole process. It’s like the story of “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” Do you really want to live the rest of your life wearing no clothes just because you can’t handle a little honesty?

It’s natural to be a little apprehensive about showing your work to others, which is why I suggest you only show it to those people who you really trust. They will give you the honest feedback you need without mocking you for your efforts.

Even successful authors need to keep learning how to develop good writing skills in English. You can’t remain stagnant just because you’re too lazy to read or write or too afraid to hear what other people think. You have a lot more potential than you realize.

The history of the development of the English language or grammar itself has a lot of local, social and historical differences. Like the American and British English, both have grammatical and construction differences, nonetheless, the dissimilarities are not evenly obvious and would be discussed in an appropriate context. Historically speaking, English instigated from various dialects considered as Old English. This influence or wave in language was brought about by the Anglo-Saxon dwellers in the fifth century. The language was propagated by the Viking raiders through Old Norse language. After some time, the language was expanded into Middle English (composed of Norman-French spelling and vocabulary collections). The word ‘englisc’ (from Engle, meaning the Angles) was said to be the root term of the term ‘English’ itself (12th century). During the 15th century, the Great Vowel Shift was the focal point of the development of Modern English. Most of the words of this time had their etymologies in Greek and Latin languages.

English Grammar Manuals

According to historical accounts, during the late 1500′s, the Pamphlet for Grammar by William Bullokar was said to be the first written manual for English grammar. It basically written to demonstrate that, just like the Latin language or grammar, English grammar was also enclosed with directives and set rules. The book was actually inspired or patterned to the work of William Lily’s work regarding the Latin grammar (Rudimenta Gramatices which was published in the early 1500′s). This Latin manual was prescribed by Henry VIII to be used in formal education in England way back 1500′s. The Pamphlet for Grammar had been written using a improved spelling method using English words based on the author’s creation. Nonetheless, English grammar manuals in the following century had been published in Latin to achieve pedagogic approach. The work of Lindley Murray in the early 1800′s asserted the differences of grammatical cases in the Ancient Greek and Latin languages to that of the English language.

Learning Avenue: Using the Internet

Nowadays, the English language is considered to be the universal language of the contemporary era (especially in the business world). Speaking and expressing oneself using the English language is definitely a valuable asset these days. The emergence of business processing outsourcing tactic in commerce heavily relies on communication and English has been the medium language being used. Learning English in just a few clicks of the mouse button is very possible. As a matter of fact, there are a lot of free online English tutorial sites that could be found in the internet. Knowledge is definitely power and knowing is certainly half the battle.

One common grammar rule that even native speakers forget is in showing possession. This is a common theme in the English language. When showing possession with “your”, be careful not to be confused with “you’re” or “you are”. For example, in this sentence, “The library book is not yours, so you’re reminded to take good care of it.” One way of remembering this rule is to replace the contraction with the phrase “you are” to check if it fits correctly.

Another common mistake is the use of the words “effect” and “affect”. In fact, even professionals sometimes get tripped up on the correct usage of these words. Just be wary that “affect” is a verb and is therefore the action to be done in a sentence, such as “Your diet affects your health.” On the other hand, “effect” is a noun or adjective, and used in a sentence such as “The effect of a poor diet is poor health.”

This leads us to two more words which are commonly confused with each other for learners of English. And they are “there” and “their”. The word “there” is used to indicate a location, while “their” is used to show ownership. However, this one is easy to remember. An example would be “There are many flowers in the vase, and each of their colours is different.”

“Good” and “well” are two words that are often taught wrongly in English language schools. For example, “I am feeling good,” sounds normal and is common among speakers of English. However, this is actually not correct because “good” is not a noun, it is an adjective. “Well” is a noun, and so it should be used to replace “good” in this case. So, “I am feeling well” is the proper response to the question “How are you feeling?”

One of the biggest stumbling blocks for foreign learners of the English language is the proper usage of “a” and “an”. We use “an” before a word that begins with a vowel like “egg”. This seems easy enough, but gets problematic with words like “hour”, which doesn’t begin with a vowel. Only when it is pronounced do we understand why the word “an” is required.

Although learning the English language can sometimes be frustrating, with patience and practice it can be easily grasped within a year. It’s true that a learner can have the majority of the language down in a year. It just requires practice, practice and more practice.

This article going to show you tips that will definitely help you improve your speaking skills within very short time.

One thing to remember: these tips won’t help you if you don’t put them to use. Okay, now you can start. Here are the tips!

You can find out what is difficult for you (for example you don’t know how to say or pronounce something) and you can exaggerate your pronunciation (it’s helpful if you have problems with certain sounds). Some ideas: talk about the latest movie you have seen, talk about your plans for the weekend or about your favorite musician.

If you want to improve your pronunciation! If you are learning American English, find some good American songs, find lyrics to them and sing (or rap) along. You will not only improve your pronunciation and intonation but also learn some new vocabulary.

If you don’t live in a country in which English is an official language, then don’t worry. Just use the power of the Internet and find a language partner online or speak with your friends who also learn English.
